Janis F. Kearney, personal diarist to former President Bill Clinton

Janis F. Kearney, personal diarist to former President Bill Clinton, will be the keynote speaker during "Literacy -  A Family Affair," a two-day program.

Kearney is a lecturer, oral historian and author of "Conversations: William Jefferson Clinton, From Hope to Harlem," "Cotton Field of Dreams" and "Something to Write Home About: Memories from a Presidential Diarist."

Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 5:30 pm at the New Smyrna Beach Library.
Conversation and book signing:  Meet the author during a reception.
She will discuss her works at 6:30 pm and sign books afterward.

Panel discussion:  Kearney will moderate a discussion titled “Do you have a book in you?” The panel will feature local authors Barbara Cameron, author of "A Time for Peace"; Charlie Carlson, author of "Weird Florida"; Mary Clay, author of "Murder in the Stacks"; Michelle Donice, author of "The Other Side of Through"; Fannie Minson Hudson, author of "History of New Smyrna Black Businesses"; and Yvonne J. Peterson, author of "The Bichon Run."
The authors will sign books afterward.

Basics of landscape design

Ed Meiser, a Volusia County master gardener, will discuss the planning and placement of Florida-friendly plants. He’ll offer helpful hints and provide free landscaping information from the University of Florida.

Scams, Shams and Flim-Flams

Senior citizens can be easy prey for rip-off artists. To help seniors arm themselves with information and avoid being the next victim of a scam, Elder Law Attorney Michael Pyle will present Scams, Shams and Flim-Flams, a program specifically designed for seniors and those who care for them. Mr. Pyle will discuss how to protect yourself from the theft of your money and identity, as well as damage to your credit. He will also share tips about how to handle telephone and door-to-door sales scams.

Wildlife Writer Photographer to speak in Deltona

Charles Sobczak, Sanibel wildlife writer, will be talking about his two most recent non-fiction nature guides: Living Sanibel - a Nature Guide to Sanibel & Captiva Islands and The Living Gulf Coast - A Nature Guide to Southwest Florida.  Both books discuss native flora and fauna as well as the parks, preserves and eco-destinations found in the region. 

Mr. Sobczak will autograph copies for sale and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Deltona Library.

Jill Taufer of the Volusia County Extension Agency will present: Functional Food Series: Brain Health.

Whether you call them super foods, power foods or functional foods, these foods go beyond just providing energy, they offer distinct health benefits. This workshop will review what foods promote brain health. Participants will also learn lifestyle strategies that exercise your brain your body and boost memory skills.

Two Clown-Tastics! Camps this summer

Karen "Bubbles" Poulsen, a professional clown, will lead the library’s Clown-tastics Camp twice during summer break.  Children will learn clown basics, characterization, costumes, makeup, balloon creations, juggling, comedy magic, performance skills and acting. There also will be time for group activities, sport stacking and games. On the last day of camp, the children will give a performance in costume and makeup.

All costumes, make-up and supplies will be provided--just bring your smile!  

Tuition for the five-day class is $50. Class size is limited to 10 children, ages 7-11.
